Annual General Meeting – At last month’s AGM, we heard reports from the Volunteers’ Committee, the Editorial Committee, the Treasurer and the President. Copies of these reports will be attached to the AGM’s minutes, which can be obtained through the Society. There are two important points from the AGM we would like to share with you in this newsletter: Last year our membership figures declined by 26%, largely due to members forgetting to renew their membership. If you have not done so yet, please download the membership form from the Society’s website at http://www.bahamashistoricalsociety.com/membership.shtml. Also as a consequence of this decline in collected membership fees, the Society operated at a deficit. Please consider helping the Society with an additional donation, you will find a donation form at the bottom of this newsletter.

Jim Lawlor: "Shadrach Kerr: Priest and Missionary" Shadrach Kerr, a free boy of colour, was born in 1832 in Nassau and became the first ordained Baptist Minister in the Bahamas. He lived a life of service to others: as a boy he shared his life with Liberated Africans; in his youth he was teacher and evangelist to the salt raking islands of the Bahamas; as a young man he dedicated himself to theology and was ordained in England. He served with valour through the 1866 Hurricane in Turks Island, revolutions in Haiti and desperate working conditions in Panama and Florida. Shadrach Kerr’s early life coincided with a very crucial time in Bahamian History from Emancipation from slavery through to post disendowment and disestablishment of the Anglican Church, which brought the freedom to worship in the denomination of choice. The unequivocal success of the Baptist Faith was due to the strength and dedication of men like Shadrach Kerr. Correction – In the last newsletter, we announced that Mrs. Clarice Granger had resigned from the Society’s Fundraising Committee. This was a misunderstanding, and we are very happy and grateful to report that Mrs. Granger is still spearheading the Society’s fundraising effort. If you would like to help in this endeavour, please contact Mrs. Granger through the Society.
