NEWSLETTER February
2009 Dear Members and Friends of the Bahamas
Historical Society,
First, we must apologise for sending this newsletter
so late in the month. It took us longer than usual to confirm the next
meeting, and we have experienced some computer problems, too. (This is
why the formatting is slightly different than usual.) Nonetheless, we
are pleased to share the information below with you.
| NEXT MEETING: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26TH,
2009, 6:00PM PRESENTER:
ERIN GREENE
TOPIC: THE HISTORY OF THE RAINBOW
ALLIANCE OF THE BAHAMAS
LOCATION: MUSEUM OF THE BAHAMAS HISTORICAL SOCIETY,
SHIRLEY STREET & ELIZABETH AVENUE
The meeting is free to members of the Bahamas Historical Society
as well as the interested public. |
Last Meetings – In January,
the Society hosted three speakers:
- Ward Minnis presented his research on the 1970s radio soap opera,
The Fergusons of Farm Road. Columnist Larry Smith wrote an article
about the presentation that we would like to share with you, especially
if you did not get a chance to attend the metting: http://www.bahamapundit.com/2009/01/the-fergusons-of-farm-roada-sociocultural-perspective-on-a-turbulent-era.html
- Dr. Munir Rashad told us about the history of Islam in the Bahamas.
The Society did record this meeting on video, and we hope that we will
be able to make this available through our website soon.
- Dr. Peter T. Dalleo presented his research on Afro-Bahamian sailors
in the Union Navy during the U.S. Civil War. Another columnist, Charo
R. Walker, wrote an article about this presentation. Again, we want
to share this with you: http://blackfood.org/store/?p=102
The Bahamas Historical Society thanks Andrea P. Major of
the AMMC for these photographs! |
